TJSC 2026 Spring Workshop

We are excited to announce that we are organizing a highly interactive, discussion-based spring workshop.

  • Are you experiencing a decline in enrollment in Japanese courses?

  • Do you see a significantly lower retention rate beyond Level 1 courses?

  • Is your Japanese program experiencing pressure from budget reductions?

  • Has your Japanese program downsized or closed recently?

  • Are you unsure how to advocate for your Japanese program or for your position?

  • Are you having difficulty filling a Japanese teacher position or multiple positions?

  • Are you concerned about the future of your Japanese program because of declining enrollment or because a large number of current teachers are expected to retire within the next 5–10 years?

If you answered “yes” to any of these questions, this workshop is for you!

  • Have any of your strategies to overcome these challenges worked for your class or program?

  • Is your Japanese program growing and thriving?

Then we would like to hear your ideas!

Many colleges and universities are currently experiencing a decline in enrollment in Japanese language programs, particularly in courses beyond Level 1. This trend is influenced by multiple factors, such as changes in GE requirements, the lack of a clear connection between advanced Japanese courses and career pathways, and shifts in course modalities. Japanese language programs in K–12 are also experiencing significant pressure due to budget reductions. Smaller language programs, such as Japanese, are therefore at increased risk. 

How about Saturday schools? When fewer students study Japanese at an early stage, fewer enter higher education with prior experience in the language. This trend can further affect enrollment patterns at colleges and universities and may ultimately reduce the number of students who pursue Japanese language education as a professional pathway, including becoming future Japanese teachers.

However, we believe that Japanese programs have the potential to grow, as the sustained global popularity of Japanese culture continues to attract students, which works in our favor. We are offering this spring workshop free of charge! We want as many of you as possible to join us! Together, we will explore effective pedagogy and strategies to strengthen Japanese language programs from the ground up. Let’s join forces on this important mission: “Revitalizing Your Japanese Program.”

Note: Anyone interested in this workshop is welcome to attend, as this workshop is open to TJSC members, inactive members and non-members. However, member benefits apply only to active members. If you are an inactive member or non-member, you are encouraged to apply for 2025-2026 membership through the TJSC website. TJSC membership is valid through October 31, 2026.

TJSC 2026年 春の研修会のお知らせ

今年度、春の研修会は次のような課題についてみなさんでディスカッションしていただくワークショップを予定しております。次のような状況に直面していませんか？

  • 日本語コースの履修者数が減少していますか？

  • レベル1以降のコースで履修継続率が大きく低下していますか？

  • 日本語プログラムが、予算削減の影響を受けていますか？

  • 最近、日本語プログラムが縮小されたり閉鎖されたりしましたか？

  • 日本語プログラムやご自身のポジションをどのように守り、支えていけばよいか分からないと感じていますか？

  • 日本語教師を見つけることが難しい状況ですか？

  • 履修者数の減少や、今後5〜10年以内に多くの現職教師が退職予定であることなどの理由から、日本語プログラムの将来に不安を感じていますか？

これらの質問のいずれかに「はい」と答えた方は、ぜひこのワークショップにご参加ください！

また、これらの課題を克服するための取り組みが、あなたのクラスやプログラムで成功した例はありますか？あなたの日本語プログラムは順調に成長していますか？

現在、多くの大学・短期大学では、日本語プログラムの履修者数が減少しており、とくにレベル1以降のコースでその傾向が顕著です。この背景には、GE（一般教育）要件の変更、上級日本語コースとキャリアパスとの明確なつながりの不足、授業形態の変化など、さまざまな要因があります。また、K–12（初等・中等教育）の日本語プログラムも、予算削減による大きな圧力を受けています。そのため、日本語のような比較的小規模な言語プログラムは、より大きなリスクにさらされています。

では、補習校（土曜学校）はどうでしょうか？幼い段階で日本語を学ぶ生徒が減ると、日本語学習経験を持って高等教育に進む学生も減少します。この傾向は大学の履修状況にも影響を与え、最終的には日本語教育を職業として目指す学生、つまり将来の日本語教師の数の減少にもつながる可能性があります。

しかし一方で、日本文化の世界的な人気は今も続いており、日本語プログラムには成長の可能性があると私たちは信じています。

今回の春季ワークショップは参加費無料です！ぜひ多くの皆さまにご参加いただきたいと思います。効果的な教授法や、日本語プログラムを基礎から強化するための戦略を一緒に探っていきましょう。
